Wedding Letter Reads: What are they and are they for you?
You know how some wedding videos have sweet and sentimental narration in the background? This can come from several sources: most commonly the vows, speeches, or a letter read. The latter is the opportunity for the bride and groom to write a message prior to the wedding day expressing their feelings to one another. The messages are then delivered to each other the day of the wedding, usually with the assistance of the bridal party or some helpful vendors. Prior to the ceremony, both bride and groom read their letter which commonly evokes some laughs and a tear or two (we can’t lie, the ones that get choked up are usually the best). All the while, the video team is quietly in front, capturing the moment.
We have worked with some couples that have taken their own spin on it. One couple decided to read their own letter (bride read what she wrote to the groom and vice versa). I was worried it wouldn’t be as sentimental because they already knew what they were reading, which makes it less likely to have an emotional response. BUT theirs ended up really sweet! It fit the video beautifully.
Another couple decided not to read their letters aloud at all. Needless to say, the words couldn’t be used in the video as there was no audio, but there were a few clips of them reading silently we used that were touching. And of course, the whole point is that they got to share their emotions with one another whether we were able to use it in their video or not.
Letter reads don’t fit the style of every couple and that is totally ok! In fact, it’s better not to force a tradition that doesn’t feel natural or feel “you” (don’t forget, that can be applied to any portion of the day). Each couple has their own dynamic and the video should reflect that. If you are too private or reserved to write a letter or to read it aloud you will still be able to have a beautifully sentimental wedding video. This is just one feature of a wedding that can add depth and excitement to the day and to the respective video.
